Hello Class! :D Here's the update on last week's National Day celebration! Before the celebration, we had Project 2. Murphy's group had to BBQ satays. That created a lot of smoke in the lab. lols! So this was what resulted..

& when its all over.. We had a longgg break to SCL(LS) NDP celebration!

We needed 6 players and we only had 5. So we borrowed FS0802's Samantha for the first game & Mr Stewart for the rest of the games. lols! Many thanks to them both! :D

FS0803 Class Outing (25 June 2009)

Lunch at the Sakura International Buffet Restaurant (Orchard Shopping Centre) followed by hmm.. Posing beside billboards, and more crazy activities! (:

Everyone met at Somerset MRT station at 11.30am or so. After a bit of waiting, we headed for the restaurant.

Nabilah enjoys disturbing people. Lol.
Wan Wen and Bi Xue had snuck off before meeting everyone at the MRT to buy a birthday cake. We had intended to get this for Woon Ching initially. But hang on, there's a double surprise for this.

Yup! Here's the double surprise! We're celebrating Woon Ching's and Bi Xue's birthdays, which fall on Friday and Sunday respectively.

It was very ironic, sending one of the birthday girls to buy the cake. It was a mistake on my part because it was decided that we should celebrate Bi Xue's birthday too only after Wan Wen and she left to get the cake. My bad. xD

We went to the Borders at Wheelock Place. We must have been a funny sight, ok? All 9 of us were sitting down along the aisle, checking out our horoscopes! There were the more interesting books that told us how our birthdate determines our personality, health, career, love language etc. Everyone's so tickled by the 'In Bed' section. ;D

We went to That CD Shop and hung around for a bit. Amir headed back after that while the rest of us proceeded to hang around at Far East Plaza.

Nabilah, Woon Ching and I left at 5.30pm while the rest stayed behind at FEP. Not sure if anything else happened after that. But that concludes the class outing for now! (:

1. Home-Based Learning Exercise from 29 June to 5 July 2009

NYP is implementing a home-based learning exercise for students starting from 29 June to 5 July 2009. This exercise, which includes self-directed learning and e-learning, is to test our preparedness to ensure that the polytechnic continues to function in the event of a deteriorating Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic situation in Singapore.The home-based learning exercise will apply to all students except for the following groups:
- Students doing their Final
-Year Project work- Students on Industrial Attachment Programme
- Students doing Teaching Enterprise Project (for SBM students)
- Students scheduled for clinical practice (for SHS students)
- Students taking CET (Continuing Education and Training) courses

All students involved in this week-long home-based learning exercise should stay away from campus. Common tests originally planned for during this period will be re-scheduled. Students are advised to follow the learning plans and arrangements of their respective Schools. Such learning plans will either be made known to you directly by your School or made available at the NYP e-learning portal (or other systems specified by your School). Specific time periods for home-based learning are given below:

Year 1 students - 8 am to 1 pm
Year 2 students - 1 pm to 6 pm
Year 3 students - 6 pm to 10 pm

You are advised to check your NYP email account regularly and visit NYP/school websites and myNYP Portal for information updates and announcements. Measures will be in place to ensure minimal disruption to your studies. Your lecturers are accessible via email or phone should you need to contact them. As some students may not have timely access to this email message, we encourage you to share this information with your NYP coursemates.

Normal lessons in campus will resume on Monday, 6 July.

2. Temperature Screening Exercise

Those students who will be undergoing specific programmes at the campus next week will be required to go to the TAC@Auditorium for temperature screening twice a day from 7.30 am to 7.00 pm for that entire week from 29 June to 3 July. As usual, stickers will be issued - AM (valid between 7.30 am and 2 pm) and PM (11.30 am onwards until 7 pm).
Please proceed to the TAC at the Auditorium for temperature-taking first thing on arrival on campus, and again at between 11.30 am to 2 pm.In addition, please note that NYP will be conducting temperature screening exercise for all students, staff and visitors at the TAC@Auditorium on every Monday from 6 July onwards.

3. Leave Of Absence (LOA)

(a) For students who have travelled overseas and returned from affected countries*, it is mandatory for you to observe a 7-day Leave of Absence (LOA) from the date of return to Singapore (i.e. you must stay away from campus). You are also required to make an online declaration of your travel history through myNYP Portal.
Please ensure that you monitor your health conditions for 7 days upon return to Singapore by checking for fever or any flu-like symptoms and keep your Personal Mentors or any of your lecturers informed. Please also practise social distancing measures for 7 days (i.e. stay home and avoid going to public places).
If you develop fever or flu-like symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately or call 993.*As of 24 June, the affected countries are: USA, Mexico, Canada, UK, Spain, Chile, Australia, Japan, Argentina, Panama, Philippines, Thailand, Dominican Republic, Hong Kong, Indonesia. Please refer to the MOH website for updates (http://www.moh.gov.sg).

(b) For students who develop fever or flu-like symptoms, even if you have no travel history, you are also required to observe a 7-day LOA and seek medical attention at any of the Pandemic Preparedness Clinics (PPCs). Food Science Course T-shirt

Hey class!

The course T-shirt is back! Its time to choose a colour for the shirt. :)

The proposed colour so far is orange, anyone has other suggestions or objections?
*Dark colours are not suitable for the design
This is the lovely design which would be printed at the back of the shirt. ^
The words 'Food Science' would be printed in front.

Hope you guys would buy the shirt as we would only get one at $12 if we meet 150 pieces. Otherwise, it would be pricey. It would be our own unique shirt. :)

Hey guys!

For those who have printed your practical manual earlier, before Amir's email, just wanna tell you guys, that the only changes was in Practical 6: Protein Determination (Bradford Analysis).
i know it might be redundant as you guys can just reprinted it, but for those who doesn't wanna waste $$, here you go. . .

Add these:
- Materials
> Fresh homogenised whole milk
> Whey Protein concentrate powder (WPC80 Fonterra)

- Procedure
> 13. When reading absorbance:
a) zero the spectrophotometer with standard curve blank.
b) read absorbance of all samples at 595nm.
c) read the standard curve tubes from low to high & then read your unknown samples.
d) ensure that the outside of he curve is free of moisture and smudges prior to inserting it in the spectrophotometer for reading.
> 14. Plot your standard curve and estimate the protein of your samples. Compare the measured results with those of actual values.

Hi all,
Due to change of grading format, I have modified the marking scheme slightly. The 5% peer assessment will be removed and this will be added to the report. Second presentation marking scheme:
- Food and Catalogue presentation 40%
- Report 30%
- Individual assessment 10%

To help me to grade, I need the individual group members to indicate their contribution to the report. Example: If "XXX" has done the tabulation and discussion for Trials #1-3, then "XXX" should sign off at the end of this section.

If any of the students want to do a small poster to put on the bench then kindly do an A3 size one as we have plenty of A3 stencils but not A4 size. Then the length of one bench is about 2m and width 1.3m if u want to buy your own table cloth. Also, remind the class about how they want to contain their samples,. For example, sampilng cups, pudding cups etc and what type and size of utensils like spoons, forks they need. They got to check if the lab has their containers before they go out and buy.

GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR "live" PRESENTATION!!!

We will be exhibiting everyone's products on the 21st January in our food labs, together with the Year 2 and 3 students' master pieces. Other non-Food Science Lecturers, administrative staff and senior management will be invited to sample your products. You will be assessed/ graded during this exhibition.

Details Start Time: 1130am - 400pm
Exhibition Room: Block N Rooms 609 and 611
Preparation Room: Block N Room 607

You will be allocated your work space and you are responsible to decorate your display area. You may have a display serving portion set IF you think it is necessary. Remember each class is an individual restaurant setting, so let your theme flow within the class during your display

Group 3 - Mini Chefs
Group 2 - S'perb 02
Group 1 - La Cuisine De FS0801

What are you supposed to do? Prepare enough samples for 50-60 people. PLEASE make sure the 3 assessors have ENOUGH to grade your group. Sample size - bite size/ 3 mouthfuls Serve hot food hot, cold food cold. Observe food hygiene practices and food safety measures Work out your purchase requirements and submit your forms to me by Monday 19th Jan.

We have intentions to invite food companies to visit and taste the exhibits a few days after this event, so outstanding products will be exhibited again. So give your best & put on the coat of excellence so as to do justice to all your hard work for the semester.

hey guys,

Like i told you earlier on, since nobody come out with the idea, i came out with one. no more changes or it'll get messy.

All i need u guys to do now are:
1. email me ur prod photo, description, price and obviously the dish name
2. contribute $$ for laminating and printing of the "menu"

you guys can't expect me to pay for the whole thing myself. i'm not v. rich mind you.

Class Outing @ Seoul Garden

It was a coincidence that the class outing was the same one as FS0802. what i meant was that it happens to be the same place and the same day... and FS0802 class rep was kind enough to book a place for us at Seoul Garden. Thanx very much.we appreciate it alot.

We met Ms Marlene first as she didn't know where Causeway Point was and a few other students of hers as well as family members tagged along. All in all, we all had lots of fun there. though its just bonding among the students in every booth. not an ideal place for bonding. hehe. let the photos do the talking.

There will also be a Biostats quiz on Binomial Distribution. The quiz will be on Week 14.

Carellynn's Christmas Party - 25/12

Hi! Just here to update on the Christmas Party at Carellynn's house. :)
Jasmine, Nabilah, Fiza, Wanwen, Bixue, Charmaine & I went there at around 1pm.

Then we had a buffet.

Followed by Carellynn & her mum showing us the wonders of some products, mineral salts etc..

Then was present exchange time. :D

we were given numbers and the presents too were given numbers. So we took the presents with the same number as what we took.

Happy with our presents. :D

Stop the prompting

I would appreciate it if the prompting for getting the email by Betty Low would stop.

I haven't any emails from her lately. If I had the email, I would have sent to everyone by now.

Take the initiative to email her or try to mess around with Excel. It is not hard to draw out the graph in Excel.

Pls inform the class that every group will have to hand in a report on the 23rd January 2008 Friday by 5pm for Project 1.

The content include a brief summary of:
a) The origin of the dish (snack/ dessert/ meal)?
b) The herbs and spices used for this dish
c) When was it brought into Singapore?
d) How has it changed with times in Singapore?
e) Survey current local economy and determine the demands for the current market.
f) Discuss what can be done with the product you have selected and how it will meet the current or future demands of the food industry.
g) Your weekly trials, evaluations and suggestions for the next trial
h) Final recipe
i) Discussions (eg. your product, lessons learnt)
j) Conclusion
